On November 5, 2021, Vice Chancellor for Research & Creative Activities Roger Wakimoto announced specific actions required under the University of Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Interim Policy recently issued by the Office of the President. In addition to an annual campus-wide communication to raise awareness of the policy requirements, each campus is required to conduct a systematic review to locate any previously unreported Native American Human Remains or ethnographic or archaeological objects (“Native American Objects”) (see Section V.E). The intention of this campus-wide review is to ensure that UC identifies and properly reports all Native American Human Remains and Native American Objects as required by law.
Please see this BruinPost for details about the required actions from each UCLA department to conduct an informed initial assessment about whether each department/unit and individual faculty, staff, or students hold any Native American Human Remains and Native American Objects.
- The assessment from each department/unit is to be completed by Friday, December 3, 2021.
Please see this BruinPost for details about the required actions from UCLA Emeriti and Retirees to immediately return any Native American Human Remains or Native American Objects that have been removed from UC premises by University employees or retirees/emeriti (see Section V.J.1).
